Mental health issues can affect any of us, whatever our age and whatever our position in life. Through working for many years in the higher education sector, I’ve seen first hand how prevalent mental ill health is amongst the younger generations, how debilitating it can be – not just for those suffering, but for their friends and family too - and how ill-equipped the primary care services are to support those in need.
We need to:
do more to remove the stigma that still remains associated with mental ill health;
add to the dwindling pool of medical professionals who can provide the tailored care necessary for those suffering from mental ill health;
create more beds so that those in need are not turned away to fend for themselves; and
provide more post-care support for those who suffer from mental ill health to enable them to succeed in the workplace, if they are able to work.
